Flooring Installation in Knoxville, TN

Luxury vinyl plank, tile, wood floor refinish and repair, and painted tile refreshes, with the subfloor prep done right. We do the work ourselves for homes in Knoxville, Farragut, Oak Ridge and Maryville.

Flooring in Knoxville and Farragut

What flooring do Knoxville and Farragut homeowners choose?

Most Knoxville and Farragut homeowners choose luxury vinyl plank for halls, bedrooms, kitchens, basements and converted garages. It stands up to daily traffic, it is quiet underfoot, and it can go down over a properly prepared subfloor or slab. Bathrooms usually stay tile, and a worn tile floor can be refreshed with paint and a stencil instead of being torn out. Homeowners with wood floors often keep them and have them refinished or repaired. The material matters, but the prep matters more. We pull the old floor, check for soft spots and squeaks, level the surface, and deal with moisture before any new floor goes down. Then we set transitions, baseboard and shoe molding, so the finished room looks done.

If you are not sure which way to go, we walk the rooms with you and talk through what each floor would change.

Material comparison

Luxury vinyl plank, tile, hardwood or a tile refresh

Each floor does something different for a room. Here is how the four compare in general terms. We confirm the details for your rooms at the walkthrough.

Water resistancePlank resists water well. Seams and edges still need care, and standing water under any floor is a problem.Tile and grout handle water. Grout lines need sealing and upkeep, and the layer under the tile matters.Wood does not like standing water. It fits dry rooms and needs quick cleanup of spills.Paint sits on the tile surface. It suits light-use rooms and needs a sealer. Wear depends on traffic.
Feel underfootSlightly firm, quieter than tile, warmer than tile.Hard and cool underfoot.Warm and solid. Refinishing resets the color and the sheen.Same as the tile underneath, hard and cool.
Where it fitsKitchens, halls, bedrooms, basements, bonus rooms, converted garages.Bathrooms, kitchens, entries, laundry rooms.Living rooms, halls, bedrooms, dens.Small bathrooms, powder rooms, laundry rooms.
Prep it needsA flat, clean, dry subfloor. Old floor out first. Underlayment when the product calls for it.A very flat, stiff subfloor. Backer board is often part of the job. More prep than plank.Check for loose boards, squeaks and damaged boards to replace. Sanding dust is controlled and trim is protected.Deep clean and degrease, repair chips, prime for tile, then paint, stencil and seal.
What it changesThe whole look of a room, plus new transitions and trim at the doors.A hard, lasting surface. Floor height and door clearance change.Brings the floor you already have back, instead of tearing it out.Color and pattern only. The tile and the layout stay where they are.

Subfloor and prep

The prep checklist behind every floor we lay

A new floor is only as good as what is under it. This is what we go through before the first plank or tile goes down.

  • Remove the old floorOld plank, tile, carpet, tack strip and glue come up, and the subfloor is swept clean.
  • Check for soft spots and squeaksWe walk the floor, mark soft areas and squeaks, and fix them before anything goes on top.
  • Level the surfaceLow spots get filled and high spots get dealt with, so plank locks tight and tile sits flat.
  • Moisture concerns on a slabGarage, basement and slab-on-grade floors get a close look for dampness before we choose how to proceed.
  • UnderlaymentWe use the underlayment the flooring calls for, and we go with what suits the room and the subfloor.
  • TransitionsWhere one floor meets another, we set a clean transition at the right height.
  • Baseboard and shoe moldingBaseboard comes off when needed and goes back, with shoe molding to close the gap at the floor.
  • Door clearanceWe check that doors still swing over the new floor, and trim the door bottoms when they need it.
How it works

How a flooring job goes, start to finish

  1. Measure and pick the material

We measure the rooms, look at the subfloor and talk through luxury vinyl plank, tile, wood floor work or a tile refresh. You pick the material and the look.

  2. Plan the furniture move-out

We agree on which rooms go first and what needs to move. Smaller rooms can be done one at a time, so you are not living out of boxes.

  3. Removal and subfloor prep

The old floor comes up. We check for soft spots, squeaks and moisture, then level and prepare the surface for the new floor.

  4. Install and trim

The floor goes down room by room. Transitions, baseboard, shoe molding and door clearances are finished right behind it.

  5. Cleanup and walkthrough

We clean up the work area, then walk the rooms with you to look at every edge and transition before we call it done.

Price

What affects the price of a flooring job

We do not quote numbers without seeing the rooms. These are the things that move the price, so you know what to expect at the walkthrough.

  • Size of the area

More square footage means more material and more hours on the job.

  • Material you choose

Plank, tile and wood work are priced and installed differently.

  • Condition of the subfloor

Soft spots, squeaks and uneven areas take repair time before a new floor goes on.

  • Removing the old floor

Glued down tile or old plank takes more work to take out than carpet does.

  • Moisture on a slab

Slab floors can need extra steps before flooring is a good idea.

  • Layout and cuts

Halls, closets and bathrooms with many corners and cuts take longer than a square room.

  • Trim and transitions

New baseboard, shoe molding and door trimming add to the scope.

  • Furniture and access

Rooms that need furniture moved, or are hard to reach, change the plan.

Where we work

Flooring across Knoxville, Farragut, Oak Ridge and Maryville

  • Knoxville
  • Farragut
  • Oak Ridge
  • Maryville

Homes around Knoxville come in different builds. Some sit on a concrete slab, some on a crawlspace, and some have a basement or a garage that has become living space. Each one changes the prep. A slab asks about moisture. A crawlspace home asks about soft spots and squeaks in the subfloor. We look at what you have before we suggest a material.

Questions

Flooring questions we hear in Knoxville

What affects the cost of flooring installation in Knoxville?

The size of the area, the material you pick, the shape of the rooms and the condition of the subfloor all move the price. Removing the old floor, trim and transitions, and any slab moisture steps also count. We do not guess numbers over the phone. We walk the rooms, agree on the scope, and give you the price for that work.

Should I choose luxury vinyl plank or hardwood?

It depends on the room. Luxury vinyl plank handles daily traffic, is quiet, and suits kitchens, halls, basements and converted garages. Hardwood is warm and solid, and works in dry rooms where it can be refinished over time. If you already have a wood floor, repair and refinishing is often worth a look before you replace it.

Can you install a new floor over existing tile?

Sometimes, but we look at it first. Tile has to be flat, solid and clean, and the grout lines and the new floor height both matter. We check for loose tile and for how the new floor would meet doors and other rooms. If the tile is the problem, we take it up instead of covering it.

Can you put flooring in a garage or on a slab with moisture?

Yes, we have turned a garage into a finished room with luxury vinyl plank. Slab floors need a close look for moisture before anything goes down, and the prep depends on what we find. We confirm the plan for your slab at the walkthrough, and we do not cover a damp floor without a plan.

How long does it take and can we stay home?

Most homeowners stay in the house during flooring work. We plan the job room by room so you keep part of the home usable, and furniture move-out gets planned first. Time depends on the rooms, the material and the prep. We confirm the schedule at the walkthrough instead of promising a day count.

Which flooring works with pets and kids?

Luxury vinyl plank is a common pick for pets and kids because it handles daily wear and cleans up easily. Tile is also tough and wipes clean, though it is hard and cool underfoot. Wood can scratch, but it can be refinished. We talk through how your household uses each room before you choose.

What areas do you serve for flooring?

We install flooring in Knoxville, Farragut, Oak Ridge and Maryville, Tennessee, and the neighborhoods around them. Curtis Can Do LLC is based in Farragut and works as a home-based service business.
